Get Your House In Order

Get Your House In Order

There might be days when you feel overwhelmed and lost by the magnitude of tasks and responsibilities that you have. I feel this way some days too, so a rule that reminds me to kick into action is a simple rule that is from the book “12 Rules for Life” by Jordan Peterson.

Rule 6: Set your house in perfect order before you criticise the world.

Funnily enough, no one is perfect so nor can a house be perfect. But the point of this rule is to fix your home as best as possible. To put it simply; take responsibility for your own life and not blame others for your misfortunes. Focus on what you can control and try to improve your situation as much as possible.

Let me break this down into 3 core areas of focus:

  1. Physical health and environment
  2. Mental health and wellbeing
  3. Relationships

Your physical health is the mechanism that allows you to experience and do things, it is the home for your heart and soul. So ensure you make an effort to take care of your body and your health so that you can experience more and do more things. The better physical shape you’re in the better understanding you have of your body and its limitations.

Don’t forget your environment plays a part in your physical health, it is the space you live in, sleep in, and love in. It’s the place to recharge yourself. So do yourself a favour and set up your home so that it helps you in recharging your physical batteries. The way your home is set up also plays a part in your mental health and wellbeing.

Your mental health and well-being is the internal system that drives your body. So as the driver, the captain of the ship you must understand how your internal and external systems work. Just as you maintain and fuel your body with exercise and nutritional foods, you must also create practices and principles that will help you train your mind so that you can better manage stress and help you navigate mental obstacles.

Some of the guiding principles I refer back to and practices I have, include; journaling, talking to myself, doing mental check-ins and listening to guided meditations. We have a great selection of short practices that are under 10 minutes. Check out this latest meditation with our guest Boudene Hauraki as Liem guides him in a practice that Bou says “This hits different”. Listen now and check out our other practices here

The last core area is ‘relationships’. When you start on those two areas, it will simultaneously help you develop better relationships with yourself and others. By focusing on areas you can control and change, the world around will also start to change also. However, just as you fuel, maintain and practice with physical and mental health you must also do the same with your relationships. The dynamics of every relationship are different so I can break those down in another blog.

So there you go, focus on these three areas and if you put in the time and effort, you will create some change in your life that can lead you to change the world. So, set your house in perfect order (...or try to) before you criticise the world.
